Parenting or caregiver status

Parenting

  • As was the case in the 2022 census, a minority of Concordia students (8%) are parents or legal guardians. The proportion is higher among older students (43% of respondents aged 35 years old or more), women (10%), graduate students (16%) as well as those pursuing interdisciplinary studies (17%).  
  • 21% of student parents or legal guardians also identify as an Indigenous person in Canada, and 10% identify as a member of a linguistic minority group (10%).

Caregiver status

  • Less than one out of ten Concordia students indicate being a caregiver (8%), the same proportion as observed in 2022. Within this proportion, students aged 55 years old or more are more likely to be caregivers (44%). 
  • More student caregivers also report an Indigenous identity (18%), membership in a gender-diverse community (12%), are pursuing studies at the graduate level (12%) and/or on a part-time basis. (12%). Students with a disability (11%), members of a religious or faith community (10%), and those who identify as a racialized person (10%) also report caregiving responsibilities.
