2025 Windows 11 upgrade for Concordia computers

October 8, 2025
|

Concordia will begin upgrading eligible Concordia desktop and laptop computers from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

Why is this upgrade happening? Microsoft support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft will no longer provide regular security updates for Windows 10, which increases security risks. Concordia will provide Extended Security Updates (ESU) for affected devices while we complete upgrades or replace older hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any resources available regarding the change from Windows 10 to 11?

Yes; please consult Microsoft’s information page

How can I upgrade manually to Windows 11?
If your device is eligible and you prefer to upgrade yourself before the automatic rollout:

  1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Look for Install Windows 11 and follow the prompts.

Typical upgrade time: about 1 hour for most devices; some older devices may take up to 2 hours.

How to prepare

  • Back up important files (OneDrive, network drives, external drive) before the upgrade. This will help protect your data in case anything goes wrong during the upgrade process.
  • When prompted, schedule the installation for a time when you can be away from your computer (e.g., end of day). The computer will be unavailable while installing.
  • After the upgrade you may need to sign back into Microsoft 365 apps (Outlook, Word, Excel). Desktop background or some settings may revert to defaults.

What if my computer is not compatible with Windows 11?

We will be providing Windows 10 Extended Security Updates for a year, until the fall of 2026. If you are not sure when your computer is scheduled for replacement, please reach out to your faculty or department representative to inquire about the Evergreen Refresh Program.

How will I know when it is time to upgrade my computer?

You will receive an update notification on your desktop or laptop when your computer has received the upgrade to Windows 11. You will be able to schedule the installation time through this prompt.

I have critical applications that do not function on Windows 11, what can I do?

If this is the case, please let us know by emailing help@concordia.ca. You can continue to use Windows 10 through the Extended Security Updates, but we will work with you to find a long-term solution.

I have a lot of applications; will they work with Windows 11?

Applications that work with Windows 10 should work without issue on Windows 11. If you experience any issues with applications once moving to Windows 11, please contact the IITS Service Desk for support in resolving the issue.

I am a Mac user, does this affect me?

In most cases, no; this move does not affect Mac users. However, if you are using a Windows 10 virtual machine on your Mac, you will need to upgrade as well.

What can I expect from Windows 11 when I am upgraded?

The biggest change you will see in Windows 11 is the user interface. The Start Menu and Taskbar have been revamped, and shortcuts/buttons may appear in slightly different places as well as new ones being added. Overall, the Windows functionality is still the same. Programs you have been using such as Outlook, Word, and Excel will not change when run on Windows 11.

After the upgrade is complete, users may notice the following:

  • Desktop backgrounds may return to default settings.

  • You may need to re-sign into Microsoft 365 applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.)

  • Pop-up messages may appear stating older hardware drivers have been disabled. While not critical, please let us know.
