The Thesis Whisperer Blog’s post, phdchat on Twitter, is a good introduction for getting started with Twitter, making the most out of its functions as an academic, specifically the live chat and using hastags. “A hashtag placed before a word, or string of words with no spaces, turns the piece of text into a special sort of ‘search link’; when you click on it your timeline changes to show all the tweets containing that hashtag. Hashtags can be used to make informal, adhoc chat channels.”

Here are some Hashtags:

#gradchat: commonly used as a general hashtag for graduate student discussions.

#highered: Popular hashtag covering general discussion about higher education.

#academia” As its name indicates this is a hashtag for anything related to the world of academia.

#PhDChat: This hashtag is for PHD students and professors and anyone else interested in the PhD life. This chat is weekly and is held every Wednesday.

#PhDAdvice: An asynchronous hashtag for curated discussions and conversations among PhD folks.

#PhDForum: For asynchronous discussions for anyone interested in PhD studies.

#ScholarSunday: If you are an academic, use #ScholarSunday hashtag to recommend some new Twitter users to your followers. You will also find what others have recommended for you to follow.

#AcWri: A hashtag used to generate discussions about academic writings.

#Postdocs

#gradschoolproblems

#ecrchat (early career researcher)

#socphd (social sciences)
