$20M investment launches MCS+ Space innovation hub in Shawinigan

A $20M investment from the Government of Quebec will support the creation of MCS+ Space, a new innovation hub in Shawinigan dedicated to accelerating the development of advanced technologies in electrification, batteries and advanced materials. Concordia's Volt-Age research program is among the founding partners of this ambitious initiative.
Bringing together the Centre national en électrochimie et en technologies environnementales (CNETE), Cégep de Shawinigan, the City of Shawinigan, Vallée de la transition énergétique and Volt-Age, MCS+ Space will provide specialized laboratories and technology platforms to accelerate the development, validation and transfer of technologies for electrification and defence markets.
“MCS+ Space represents the culmination of years of commitment by Volt-Age to advancing the energy transition. We are proud to contribute to making Shawinigan a leading hub for battery innovation in collaboration with our local partners,” says Karim Zaghib, executive director of Volt-Age and professor of chemical and materials engineering at Concordia University.
By bringing together complementary expertise in research, innovation and technology transfer, MCS+ Space will help attract talent, support the commercialization of emerging technologies and strengthen Quebec’s position in strategic sectors such as critical minerals, batteries and electrification.
