Clad in Concordia’s football jerseys, nearly 20 Stingers convened at Le Club West Island in Beaconsfield, Quebec, to usher in a new era for the team.

Players were joined by staff — several entering their first calendar season with the team — fundraisers and supporters at the meet and greet, which took place August 30.

Mickey Donovan, BA 06, joined the team as head coach in February. His younger brother, Patrick Donovan, BA 07, is the team’s assistant head coach. Both are former Stingers.

“We’re fortunate to have these players and this staff,” said Mickey Donovan. “Training camp this summer has been special, and we’re all eager to get this season underway.”

There are over 90 players on the Stingers football team. As Donovan said: “This year we have lots of talent joining us from the United States.”

Players come from Oregon to Texas. There isn’t a lack of local talent — four players at the meet and greet were born and raised in Montreal.

Other members of the coaching staff at the get together included Pete Regimbald, BA 73, who started working as a coach at Loyola College, one of Concordia’s founding institutions, in 1967.

The meet and greet — and the season — rely on the support of fundraisers and donors.

“The money we raise helps pay for athletic scholarships and equipment,” said Hotte. “It also allows us to get together and have fun every once in a while.”

Arsenault echoes the sentiment. “It’s not just about football, it’s about community,” said Arsenault. “I think alumni, especially, should support their universities. Most people want to give back, they just need a little push.”

The season kicks off on September 6, at Concordia Stadium on Loyola Campus, when the team faces Bishop’s University.
