On February 22, Concordians will lace up their boots as part of a wintry walkathon in support of homeless Montrealers. Kelly Mackay, an Advancement and Alumni Relations development officer in the Faculty of Fine Arts, will lead Team Concordia on the downtown march to raise funds and awareness.

Concordia’s Office of Community Engagement will oversee Team Concordia’s involvement in the Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser to benefit the St. James Drop-In.

Since 2011, the Coldest Night of the Year has supported the less fortunate across 65 Canadian communities. Canada-wide, 1,415 teams will rack up 38,540 kilometers as part of the walk.

Team Concordia consists of a half-dozen faculty, students and alumni. Registration is still open. Participants will walk either 2.5 or 10 kilometers.

Funds raised by all nine Montreal teams will benefit the St. James Drop-In Centre which is situated close to Concordia’s Sir George Williams Campus.

“One of the numerous reasons Concordia pledged to support the drop-in centre is that they’re neighbours,” says Mackay, who is also a board member at the St. James Drop-In Centre.

Team Concordia hopes to raise $1,000. “Ideally we’ll raise closer to $2,500,” says Mackay.

Concordia’s support of the St. James Drop-In Centre is part of the university’s larger concern for the community. “Concordia’s initiative is incredibly supportive of this local organization,” says Mackay.

The walk will take place between 5:15 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22. A warm meal will be served to participants.
