It was billed as a sporting battle royal that promised hoops, hang-time — and grey hair. It delivered.

The Alumni Basketball Challenge, a Concordia first, saw Stingers alumni square off against their McGill archrivals of old at a charity tournament at Loyola Campus on October 6.

The women’s Stingers topped their longstanding foes, the McGill Martlets, 60-47 in a Sunday match-up that capped Concordia’s Homecoming 2013 festivities.

“It’s an opportunity to see athletes that I played with 20 years ago,” said Patricia Demers, BA 95, MSc 97, director of bursary programs and athlete support at Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence du Québec. “Back then we had no sympathy for our opponents.”

As did the McGill men for their rival alumni Stingers.

Arcade Fire lead vocalist Win Butler, a charity tournament veteran, helped lift the McGill Redmen to a 97-81 win.

No matter. “It was a family affair,” said tournament organizer Dexter John, BA 93, who runs DJ Sport Club Inc., a sports-education charity for youths.  “I always use basketball for a greater purpose.”
