FOOD SECURITY HELP IN MONTREAL

Websites like 211 Grand Montréal can help you find local resources for food assistance.

University-based resources

  • The People's Potato (Concordia University): Offers a free vegan lunch on weekdays from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM. You must bring your own container. They also distribute emergency food baskets twice a month.

  • Midnight Kitchen (McGill University): Provides free meals and food assistance. Open to everyone (no ID or proof of residence required for any services, including food bank).

Community and religious organizations

  • Saint-Vincent de Paul Society Serves any person with a difficult financial situation regardless of their culture, language or religion.

1085 De la Cathédrale St., H3B 2V3 (514) 866-1661

  • MADA Centre: Provides food assistance to those in need.

  • SNAC: Service de nutrition et d'action communautaire

  • The Dépôt: Located in NDG. Emergency Food Baskets available.

Food Banks: Many food banks in Montreal offer food baskets. While some may have a nominal fee (such as $5), they can provide a significant amount of food. It's best to contact them directly to confirm their policies and what you need to bring.

  • "Buy Nothing" groups: Local groups on platforms like Facebook can be a good way to find free food that people are giving away.

  • Maison Masjid Canada (MMC): Provides food support, including home delivery for those who are homebound, and offers workshops for long-term financial stability.

  • ICNA Relief Food Bank: This is a community-supported project that relies on donations of non-perishable food and cash. It focuses on providing halal food and is supported by local community groups and individuals.

How to get help

  • Check eligibility: Some organizations may have specific requirements, such as being a student at a particular university or living in a certain neighborhood.

  • Bring your own container: For organizations that serve prepared meals, such as The People's Potato, it is often a requirement to bring your own reusable container and utensils.

  • Contact the organization: Before visiting, it's always a good idea to contact the organization directly to confirm their hours and any necessary procedures, as this can sometimes change.
