Francesco Bellini (1947-2025): Groundbreaking scientist and biotech entrepreneur

Francesco Bellini, BSc 72, LLD 02, a pioneering biopharmaceutical executive whose contributions to medical science and society left a lasting global impact, passed away on July 10 in Calgary. He was 77.
Born in Ascoli Piceno, Italy, Bellini came to Canada in 1967 and earned his BSc from Loyola College — one of Concordia’s founding institutions — five years later. After completing a PhD in organic chemistry at the University of New Brunswick, he launched a distinguished career that fused rigorous research with bold entrepreneurship.
In 1986, Bellini co-founded BioChem Pharma, which developed key antiviral therapies, including 3TC — a breakthrough drug in HIV/AIDS treatment. Under his leadership, BioChem also advanced treatments for hepatitis B and cancer, helping propel Canadian biotech research onto the world stage.
Bellini later established Picchio International and other ventures dedicated to innovative drug development. He was also co-owner of Ascoli Calcio, a professional Italian soccer club — linking his philanthropic and entrepreneurial spirit to his roots.
Throughout his lifetime, Bellini remained a dedicated community leader, supporting hospitals, cultural organizations and universities including Concordia. In 2002, the university awarded him an honorary doctorate for his outstanding scientific and civic contributions.
Bellini held more than 20 patents and was internationally recognized with numerous honours, including the l’Ordre national du Québec in 2004, the Order of Canada in 2000 and the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1997.
