The capital markets executive

Joseph Gallucci, BComm 03 (Marketing), MBA 08
By Charlie Fidelman

“A career in investment banking is a marathon, not a sprint.”

Joseph Gallucci traveled the globe over the last 15 years visiting mining operations in South America, Australia, North and Central America, Africa, China, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea — amassing extensive experience in investment banking and equity research focused on mining, base metals, precious metals and bulk commodities.

He is currently the managing director of Investment Banking at Laurentian Bank Securities, and head of its mining practice. Gallucci also sits the boards of three companies: Great Panther Mining, Skyharbour Resources, and Rockridge Resources.

His career spans several firms, including BMO, GMP Securities, Dundee Securities and as a founding principal of Eight Capital where he led their mining-investment banking practice and executive strategy. A 100-hour work week plus (pre-pandemic) frequent globetrotting “is part of the sacrifice.”

Proudest moment

“Getting recruited to join the board of Great Panther Mining, a Canadian company that produces gold and silver in Mexico and Brazil, by chairman David Garofalo, one of the top mining executives in the industry — also a long time client and mentor.”

Biggest career challenge

“Making the decision to leave a very lucrative job in the investment banking sector because of differing values. My integrity wasn’t for sale.”

The Concordia factor

“It gave me a running start. The MBA program catered to what I do today, investment banking and investment management, and it allowed me to work full time while pursuing my degree. I maintained an aggressive work and school schedule. Those were the three most difficult years of my life in terms of time management, but I learned skills that I still use today.”

Fond memories

“We were a small class of about 20, like a sports team, and we did everything together — class work, eating lunch together, it was hard but fun and rewarding. I made friends I’m still in contact with today.”

Pandemic benefits

“The price of gold went up to a historic high and that brought lots of business. Also, we’ve eliminated unnecessary travel and become more efficient through remote working.”

Words of wisdom

“Never jeopardize your integrity. Second, a career in investment banking is a marathon, not a sprint.”

Outside of work

“Father of three amazing boys, coaching the local youth soccer team and riding my motorcycles.”
