The AI expert

Chun Lei He, MCSc 05, PhD 10 (computer science)

“I became a senior software developer at BMO first, but didn’t give up. I learned the latest big data technology that was missing in big data platforms, became a data scientist, and returned to my field.”

Artificial intelligence, machine learning and pattern-recognition expert, Chun Lei He, upscaled her career at the height of the pandemic into management.

After four years as senior data scientist at Manulife, she became lead data scientist and director of data science at Canada Life, one of the biggest insurance companies in Canada.

“My team builds AI products to gain business insights and help data-driven strategies,” she says. “We focus on the automation of business and meanwhile produce business values.”

Proudest moment

“Building the first AI-driven underwriting system in Canada that automatically makes underwriting decisions in life insurance. Designed and developed with innovation, the model integrated my PhD thesis to apply to industry.”

The Concordia factor

“Following in the footsteps of top-notch pattern-recognition pioneer, Ching Yee Suen, who offered me a strong foundation for my current work in AI and machine learning. My studies at Concordia were a great journey (eight years). My husband joked that I would graduate in time for retirement.”

Educational hurdle

“Having a baby in the second year of my PhD. I briefly considered maternity leave. I was on an NSERC PhD scholarship with research and teaching positions every semester, and I worked until midnight every day. With Dr. Suen's guidance, my parents’ and in-laws’ support, I graduated on time with 15+ international publications. After that, everything was a piece of cake.”

Inspiring professor

“Without a doubt, Dr. Suen. I’m proud to be his graduate student! He is my role model in research and in life! He’s won so many awards, including the highest award in pattern recognition, he’s like a movie star. Dr. Suen was like a 'father' to his students and their families, so caring, supportive and humble.”

Career challenge

“Finding work in pattern recognition. I became a senior software developer at BMO first, but didn’t give up. I learned the latest big data technology that was missing in big data platforms, became a data scientist, and returned to my field.”

Outside of work

“Volleyball player and opera singer. I am a soprano with a few years of formal vocal training.”

Career advice

“Listen to yourself and work with patience and persistence.”
