Concordia graduation rates at national average

La Presse article cites erroneous data

Version française

An article published in the January 3, 2014, issue of La Presse claims that less than 50 per cent of Concordia students achieve their degree. In fact, the figure is closer to 75 per cent.

This faulty information about graduation rates is the result of an error in interpreting the data provided to the newspaper. In preparing his article, the reporter compared graduation rates for full-time students in 1999 with part-time students today, thereby arriving at the conclusion that graduation rates had dropped.

Had only full-time numbers been used in this comparison, we would see a slight drop of 0.3%, from 74.5% to 74.2% for undergraduates. For all cycles combined, it actually rose from 75% to 75.9%.Concordia compares favorably to the national average for full-time students, and is slightly ahead of the average in the comprehensive university category.

La Presse acknowledges the error and will print a corrected story.
