Yesterday the Government of Quebec tabled its Charter of Secular Values as draft legislation. The bill has been referred to a National Assembly committee, which will conduct a consultation process and review the proposal.

Over the past few months, I have heard from many members of the Concordia community who have expressed their concern about the direction of the Charter. Some elements, notably the equality of men and women, have very broad support.

But other key elements, and the general idea of the Charter, are strongly opposed by many members of our community.

Now that we have specifics on the proposed Charter, I will again consult with members of the Concordia community as well as the Board of Governors and Senate.

There will be an opportunity for us to present our position to the government during their consultation process.

In the meantime, I encourage you to share your thoughts by writing to me at: president@concordia.ca
