Undergraduate Case Competition set to begin

Business students from around the world to compete in week-long John Molson event

Students from 24 of the world’s top business schools will compete in the fifth annual John Molson Undergraduate Case Competition (JMUCC) from February 17 to 23.

Judges for the student-run event are representatives from the local business community, giving participants the rare opportunity to get feedback on their performance from professionals rather than from academics.

JMUCC is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious international case competitions at the undergraduate level. This year’s event will be hosted at the Hilton Bonaventure, Montreal. “What’s great about these competitions is that you get to meet and network with people from all over the world,” says Catherine Richard, a recent Concordia business graduate who is JMUCC’s VP academics. Joining the eight Canadian business schools that will send delegations to the event will be four American universities and 12 schools from outside of North America. 

“JMSB is committed to creating a learning environment that responds to the needs of the global economy,” says John Molson School of Business Dean Steve Harvey. “The international character of this competition helps serve that mission as we welcome students, coaches and corporate partners from around the world. It is truly an extraordinary experience for students and one of the signature events of the year at our business school.”

“The competition represents a wonderful opportunity for participants to develop many competencies that are essential for business leaders,” he adds. “It also provides an occasion for students, sponsors and industry professionals to connect and develop valuable partnerships.”

The team representing Concordia comprises Rose-Lyne Youssef Boghos, William Hall, Caitlin Hurst and Dennis Kalaycioglu, along with coaches Christian Bonneau, Jonathan Laurence Ruel and Marion Roussel.

“This is one of the best competitions on the circuit,” says Mark Haber, head coach and advisor to the John Molson Competition Program.

“We look forward to it because it is one of the truly integrated competitions worldwide. It combines three cases that have a three-hour prep time, as well as one 24-hour prep, requiring two very different skill sets. It is methodically run, and there are good activities for both participants and advisors.”

The Concordia team hopes to contribute to the competition program’s recent success. Since the start of the competition season, JMSB teams have reached the podium 25 times, putting the current cohort on track to break last year’s record of 57 podium finishes.
