The fall term may be just beginning, but some Concordia students are already actively looking for part-time jobs, internships and career opportunities. Finding a suitable position is never easy, but Concordia Career and Placement Services (CAPS) can help.

Students can book appointments with a CAPS Career Advisor who can offer one-on-one help navigating through the job and internship market.

“The goal of CAPs is simple,” says Susanne Thorup, CAPS manager. “Our experienced career advisers are here to help students create a job search toolkit and prepare them for the world of work.”

Thorup says whether a student is looking for a post-graduate career or a part-time job while in school, they need some of the basic tools to market themselves — including resumés and cover letters. “We also help students with proper etiquette on how to reach out to employers and how to also succeed during the interview, by offering mock interviews,” she says. “And our Career Resource Centre can assist job seekers with researching particular employers and industries. We help with the job search process from A to Z.”

CAPS offers a new online job bank through the CAPS website. The site is used by employers from Concordia University, throughout Montreal, and across Canada to post jobs specifically targeting Concordia students.

“There are a lot of local and part-time opportunities listed on our website,” says Thorup.  “Students can search and apply directly to jobs and internships.” Resumés can be posted directly to the resume bank on the system, which allows CAPS career advisors to search resumés for specific majors and forward them on to interested employers.”

“Here at CAPS, we work closely with employers and act as a liaison between local and national employers and Concordia students,” Thorup says.

This fall, CAPS is hosting three major career fairs on the Sir George Williams Campus: one for students in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, one for the Faculty of Arts and Science, and the first-ever Graduate and Professional Schools Fair.

Students can also stop by the CAPS offices on Friday, September 28 and Tuesday October 2, for resumé clinics. “In anticipation of all the fairs that we’re having, we’ll have those two dates where students can come in and have their résumés looked at without an appointment,” says Thorup.

Students looking for more immediate, part-time employment are encouraged to look into the Concordia Work-Study Program, which is offered through the Financial Aid and Awards office. The program is available to full-time Concordia students and can help them find part-time jobs on and around campus.

The Concordia Student Union’s Off-Campus Housing and Job Bank (HOJO) can also link students to part-time jobs, as well as internships and volunteer opportunities.
