New John Molson School of Business dean takes the helm

Steve Harvey is a distinguished scholar who brings extensive experience to his new role at Concordia

On July 1, Steve Harvey began his five-year term as dean of Concordia’s John Molson School of Business (JMSB). He succeeds Alan Hochstein, who served as dean in an interim capacity.

“Steve Harvey is a distinguished scholar and teacher with an exceptional academic and professional record,” says Concordia Provost and Vice-President, Academic Affairs, David Graham. “He is a dynamic administrator who will be an excellent dean and a great addition to the university’s senior academic leadership.

“I am very grateful to Alan Hochstein, who has served with distinction as interim dean of JMSB since July 1, 2011,” Graham adds. “His leadership has helped ensure that the school maintains its upward momentum during the transition to our new dean.”

Harvey has been the dean of the Williams School of Business at Bishop's University since 2008 and associate vice-principal, research, since 2010. Under his leadership, The Williams School of Business has grown and Bishop's research profile has increased.

“In all of his many functions,” said Bishop’s Vice-Principal, Academic, Michael Childs, “Steve has demonstrated a strong strategic sense, a problem-solving ability and a generosity of spirit which has made him a great role model and a wonderful colleague.”

Harvey received his PhD in industrial and organizational psychology from the University of Guelph in 1996, and has built an outstanding record of research and scholarship that includes a number of teaching awards.

His research spans the areas of youth employment, work attitudes, workplace aggression, leadership, performance management and trust in management. The focus of his newest research is on work-related stress, psychological health and well-being, and organizational interventions aimed at improved health in the workplace.
 
Harvey’s interdisciplinary research has been published in diverse international journals such as Work and Stress, Journal of Occupational Health Psychology and Journal of Business and Psychology. He has also served as consultant to a variety of organizations on topics relating to human resources management.

“JMSB is already one of the best in Canada at what it does,” says Harvey. “From case competitions and co-op programs, to sustainability. I am looking forward to working with my new colleagues to bring it into the top tier of North American business schools.”
