Robert W. Barnes, BA 68 and former president of the Association of Alumni of Sir George Williams University (AASGWU), passed away the evening of June 2. Born in 1942, he was an indefatigable supporter of his alma mater and Concordia University.

Robert was heavily involved in the AASGWU, taking on projects and events such as the annual bowlathon and the upcoming 75th anniversary of the association, a major undertaking to be held this fall.

As the AASGWU representative on Concordia's Board of Governors, he was a member of the communications and university advancement committees from 2008 to 2011, and on the real estate committee for this past academic year, 2011-12.

A few years ago, Robert campaigned to have the provenance of the Sir George Williams Campus name officially recognized through plaques on Concordia's buildings. The former president of the Association of Alumni of Sir George Williams University beamed with pride as the silver-coloured plaque was unveiled on the iconic Henry F. Hall Building. A second was installed on the John Molson School of Business Building to mark Concordia’s longstanding excellence in business education.

Harvey Stoliar, a fellow SGW alumnus, posted this touching message to Robert's family members in the online guest book: "In your time of sorrow, take comfort in knowing that Robert truly exemplified the spirit of Sir George Williams University. He will be truly missed by his family, colleagues and friends. May we find the strength and courage in the days ahead to vigorously pursue and maintain the values we so dearly share."

Robert leaves to mourn his wife, Norma, who works in Concordia's Department of Applied Human Sciences, daughter Maureen (Robert), and sons Kevin (Marie), and Trevor, along with cherished grandchildren Rielle, Blake, Zoe, Bronwyn and Darcy.

A funeral service was held June 6 at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Sir George Williams' Scholarship and Bursary Fund by visiting the link below or by contacting giving@concordia.ca.
