At its April 19 meeting, Concordia’s Board of Governors announced the selection of Dr. Alan Shepard as the recommended candidate for Concordia president and vice-chancellor. Board members were also informed that, effective July 1, Steve Harvey will join the John Molson School of Business as dean, and Norman Hébert, Jr. will begin a three-year term as Board chair. The Board also approved a one-year extension of Noel C. Burke’s mandate as dean of the School of Extended Learning.

Proposed operating budget
Chief Financial Officer Patrick Kelley presented the salient points of Concordia’s proposed operating budget for the fiscal year beginning May 1, 2012. He presented a balanced budget, pending a meeting with the Ministère de l'Éducation, des Loisirs et des Sports (MELS), slated for late April. At that meeting, MELS will provide details, which may impact revenue and some expense projections in the budget.

Board and Senate finance committees have reviewed the proposed budget, which will be presented to Senate on May 18. The Board approved the budget in principle, subject to comments from Senate and confirmation of final details from MELS. It will approve the final budget at its June meeting.

Updates

Members of the advisory search committee for the vice-president, research and graduate studies, have interviewed short-listed candidates and an announcement on public presentations is pending.

Chuck Wilson was ratified to represent undergraduate students on the evaluation committee for the dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. He replaces  Mathieu Dumais-Savard. William W. Ashby was ratified as the third Board appointee to the university’s pension committee.

The Board also approved a motion revising Article 24 of the university’s by-laws so that the specified terms of Board membership are understood to be the maximum length of terms.

The next regular meeting of the Board will be on June 21, 2012.
