André Gagné

Demystifying Religious Subcultures

André Gagné, an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director of Theological Studies investigates the religious right, fundamentalism, radicalization, religion and violence, and social identity. He is also a Digital Fellow of the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies.

As part of a recent exposé on sexual abuse within the Jehovah’s Witnesses, CTV sought out Gagné’s expert understanding of how sacred texts and traditions are used by extremist groups and individuals to justify violent acts. Professor Gagné also provided insight into the intricacies of Evangelical subcultures. The documentary, which included extensive interviews with Gagné, was broadcast nationwide, and his comments were also included in a widely read article accompanying the peice.
