University affairs

Various issues concerning Concordia University are often reported on by news outlets. Here is the most recent coverage pertaining to the institution:

  • The Montreal Gazette and the Gazette e-edition tell the story of Syrian refugee, 19-year old  Dunia Al Mehlm, who arrives in Montreal today to begin her studies at Concordia next month. It explains that she was accepted as one of Concordia’s first two Syrian refugee students with a scholarship. The paper, quoting Al Mehlm, relates how she recently graduated from the Al Salam school for refugees in Reyhanli, Turkey —  a school the Gazette notes is funded by the Syrian Kids Foundation in Montreal, in large part through bake sales and other funding activities at Concordia. Al Melhm says she will be studying micro-biology at Concordia, then medicine. Finally, the article notes that another Syrian refugee, Mohamad Sarhan, is also expected to arrive in Montreal today and begin his studies at Concordia in January in computer engineering and says four more students from the Al Salam school are expected at Concordia next year.
  • The BBC posts an excerpt of an interview in its London studios with Homa Hoodfar, who talks about the few hours she spent in Evin prison in the same cell with British-Iranian humanitarian worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, arrested in April and sentenced to five years in prison on undisclosed charges; in a related story, Ham & High writes that Hoodfar was on hand for the singing of Christmas carols by some 300 children and parents outside the British prime minister's official residence in London, yesterday. The caroling was a protest whose participants demanded that the British government do more to secure the release of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe; the BBC posts another excerpt from the Hoodfar interview mentioned above, where the Concordia professor emerita tells how her captors tormented her with music and photos to remind her of her husband, who had recently died. Note that while the BBC has posted the full interview with Hoodfar, it is not available online outside the UK.
  • Independent video game studio Thunder Lotus is featured in Cult Mtl, which writes that the startup recently moved to the RCA Records building in St-Henri after a year and a half in Concordia’s District 3 centre for innovation and entrepreneurship.
