University affairs

Various issues concerning Concordia University are often reported on by news outlets. Here is the most recent coverage pertaining to the institution:

  • There is continuing coverage of the arrest of former Concordia anthropology professor Homa Hoodfar. The retired Concordia professor has been held at Evin prison in Tehran since her arrest, June 6, and has not been allowed contact with family, friends or her lawyer: the Montreal Gazette and the paper's e-edition publish an editorial urging Iran to heed the call heard at Concordia and around the world, notably through hashtag campaigns and online petitions, for Hoodfar's immediate and unconditional release; the call for Hoodfar's release is joined by the rights organization Women’s Action Forum (WAF), whose appeal appears in Pakistan's Daily Times; the Washington-based Iran Times reports on speculation that Hoodfar may have been arrested so she could be traded for Mohammad-Reza Khavari, an accused embezzler Iran wants extradited from Canada for trial. The article also delves into Hoodfar's work as an anthropologist who has focused on the role and condition of women in the middle east; Hoodfar's arrest is mentioned in a piece in World Politics Review (behind a paywall) about what the publication says is a crackdown by a shrinking group of hardliners in Iran. Geneviève Rail, professor at the Simone de Beauvoir Institute, appeared on Radio-Canada’s Médium large. The show explored the difficulties associated with helping Hoodfar, given that she holds multiple citizenships.
