Concordia faculty and researchers are regularly asked to offer expert, informed opinions on many of today's most pressing problems. Read some of the latest news items about Concordians:

  • La Presse + reprises an opinion piece by Kimberley Manning, Simone de Beauvoir Institute principal and associate professor of political science. Manning pleads for the government to allow passage of legislation proposed by a Québec Solidaire MNA that would allow transgender children to change their gender on their birth certificates. Manning, who is the mother of a ten-year-old transgender girl, writes about the work of Gender Creative Kids Canada, a group she co-founded to support transgender children and their families. The opinion piece first appeared last week in the Montreal Gazette.
  • The Jacksonville Journal Courier and Ledger-Enquirer reprise an earlier article quoting Mourad Debbabi, professor in the Concordia Institute for Information Systems Engineering (CIISE) about cybersecurity threats to the electric utilities sector.
  • La Presse Canadienne posts a story, circulated by several media last week, quoting Chantal Maillé, professor in the Simone de Beauvoir Institute, about the under-representation of women in the House of Commons.
  • Emer O'Toole, assistant professor in the School of Canadian Irish Studies, writes in The Irish Times about her experience working as a receptionist for a company named in a journalist's recent analysis of the Irish connection to the "Panama Papers". O'Toole says the company helped wealthy individuals avoid paying certain taxes.
  • LaPresse.ca picks up a story from La Presse + quoting Kyle Matthews, senior deputy director of the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies at Concordia, about a decision announced by the government of Kenya to close the Dadaab refugee camp and expel its 344-thousand Somali inhabitants.
  • An article in Le Devoir announcing the 34th edition of Le Symposium international d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul, July 29 to August 28, mentions the participation of artist François Morelli, a professor of painting and drawing in the Department of Studio Arts and a Concordia alumnus (BFA).
