Expert commentators
Concordia faculty and researchers are regularly asked to offer expert, informed opinions on many of today's most pressing problems. Read some of the latest news items about Concordians:
- Biology professor Grant Brown is quoted in a story on CBC.ca about the controversy surrounding the city's plan, now on hold, to dump 8 billion litres of raw sewage into the St-Lawrence and the impact the untreated effluent could have on aquatic life in the river.
- The Canadian Press turns to political science professor Guy Lachapelle for his perspective on the Liberals' election campaign promise of a new child care benefit program. The story is picked up by The Globe and Mail, Yahoo! News, The Hamilton Spectator, DurhamRegion.com and National Newswatch.
- Lachapelle is quoted in a separate story on radio-canada.ca about a spike in the number of individuals and special interest groups that have registered with Elections Canada to broadcast paid messages in the course of the current federal election campaign. The article is reprised by Huffington Québec and Sympatico Actualités.
- Kyle Matthews, senior deputy director of the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS), is quoted in an article in iPolitics that challenges the suggestion by Prime Minister Stephen Harper during Monday's Munk debate on foreign policy that Canada has taken in 15 per cent of all the refugees from Syria. Matthews notes that most of the statistics on Syrian refugee resettlement are based on pledges and not on actual resettlement.
- Gabrielle Bouchard, Peer Support and Trans Advocacy Coordinator at Concordia’s Centre for Gender Advocacy, comments on new Quebec government regulations coming into effect today that make it easier for transgender people to have their gender designation changed on provincial IDs. The comment is found within an article in the Montreal Gazette.
- Rosemary Reilly, associate professor in the Department of Applied Human Sciences and director of Concordia's Human Systems Intervention (HSI) masters program, is quoted in an Agence Science-Pressearticle about the failure to learn from the 2005 Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans. The article embeds a Concordia-produced video profiling the HSI program.
- An article in Montreal Times about the latest high-tech smartwear includes a quote of smartwear expert Joanna Berzowska, associate professor in the Department of Design and Computation Arts.
