Researchers in the news
The scholarly work of Concordia faculty and researchers informs and improves society on many issues that affect our daily lives. Visit the Research section to read news stories involving research at Concordia, or read the most recent items here:
- General and specialized news outlets around the world continue to report on the creation by researchers at Concordia and Berkeley of genetically modified yeast that can be used to make opiate drugs. The study was co-authored by Vincent Martin, professor in the Department of Biology, and bioengineer John Dueber at University of California, Berkeley. Beyond the scientific accomplishment itself, the legal and social implications of the discovery are generating very widespread interest, with nearly 400 publications and broadcasters picking up the story since the study appeared in the journal Nature Chemical Biology, on Monday. The latest to report on the research: Le Scienze (in Italian), SciencePost.fr, cbc.ca, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, The Star Phoenix, Regina Leader-Post, News Every Day, In-Pharma Technologist and Genetic Literacy Project. Also, Vincent Martin was interviewed about the research on Radio-Canada International (RCI). Listen to the interview. The text version of the RCI story includes pictures of Martin and of Elena Fossati and Lauren Narcross of the Department of Biology, who were among the principles in the research.
- The Windsor Star reprises an earlier article from the Montreal Gazette about the factors that make Canada an important player in the world economy. The original article includes a picture of a group discussion at Concordia's technology business incubator, the District 3 Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
