An airflow model to reduce time on the tarmac
Posted on May 8, 2015

Several media reprise a Concordia news service release on a study of airflow models at major airports. In the study, lead author Georgios Vatistas, professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, describes a new mathematical tool he developed to calculate an aircraft's wing-tip airflow, or vortex. The calculations could allow for a decrease in takeoff distance between large planes, which in turn could reduce waiting periods between takeoffs. Vatistas partnered with Concordia Master of Applied Science (MASc) students Fani Maniki and Georgios Panagiotakakos, for the study. The release is reprised by: Press News, ECN Mag and Science Newsline. Additionally, Vancouverdesi.com, Daiji World and TVANouvelles.ca write about the study and Noodls provides a link to the original Concordia release. Publication of the study is forthcoming in the Journal of Aircraft.

Other media outlets to carry the research included: Science Codex, Phys Org, Product Design & Development, Laboratory Equipment, Big News Network, New Kerala, Silicon India, Bangalore Mirror, Zee News India, Engineering.com, Skies Mag and Business Standard. Additionally, Georgios Vatistas will be interviewed about his research for the Télé-Québec program Le Code Chastenay, to be televised at a later date this year.
