The bystander effect
A coroner’s report points out dozens of Montrealers passed by Radil Hebrich as he lay bleeding on a metro platform before later dying of head injuries last winter. Social psychologists have analysed the phenomenon of the bystander effect where the greater the number of people present following an accident, the less likely a victim is to get help.
Theresa Bianco from the Department of Psychology can explain the bystander effect and what actions can be taken to counter it.
