Female bishop in the Church of England
Female bishop in the Church of England
The issue of female clergy continues to divide Anglicanism globally, even as the Church of England has finally consecrated its first female bishop. Women already serve as bishops elsewhere within the worldwide Anglican Communion, notably in Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. But Anglican churches in many developing countries do not even ordain women as priests. The Church of England service for the Right Reverend Libby Lane was disrupted by a vocal protest from a priest in attendance.
Donald Boisvert, chair of the Department of Religion can analyse the significance of the Church of England’s move but also provide perspective on the continued resistance by some members of the Church to women’s ordination.
