Publication ban #YouKnowHerName
Publication ban on #YouKnowHerName
A judge has imposed a publication ban on the trial of the men accused in the case of an alleged sexual assault of a 15 year-old girl in Nova Scotia. The victim’s name was widely known when she took her life after photos of the alleged attack were circulated. The parents of the young girl say they’d like her name to be made public in spite of the ban. The hashtag #YouKnowHerName was created to draw attention to the case without violating the court-ordered publication ban. The Chronicle Herald newspaper has decided to publish the victim’s name saying they believe it’s in the public interest to challenge the publication ban.
Alan Conter, a lecturer in the Department of Journalism, can discuss the implications of the publication ban and the decision to challenge it.
