Attack on Kurdish Iraqis

Five people have been killed by a suicide bomber in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region. The attack is the first in more than a year as the region has managed to insulate itself from the violence that continues to rage elsewhere in Iraq. The Iraqi Kurdish security council has expressed concern that IS militants may be entering the region along with more than a million people who have fled the widespread violence. IS militants have made repeated threats against the Kurds who are fighting them along a front that stretches more than 1,000 kilometers.

Richard Foltz, professor and director of the Centre for Iranian Studies has just returned from Iraq’s Kurdish region and can provide perspective on the situation.
