On Tuesday, October 29, at the Canadian embassy in Berlin, Van Ham Fine Art Auctions returned an 1837 painting by Andreas Achenbach to the estate of Max Stern. This is the 11th painting returned as part of the Max Stern Art Restitution Project, which is piloted by Concordia and led by Clarence Epstein, Director of Special Projects and Cultural Affairs in the Office of the President. Epstein is quoted in the Borneo Post about the restitution.
The Montreal Gazette publishes an article about the Plundered Cultures, Stolen Heritage conference being held at Concordia November 6 and 7. The article quotes Frank Chalk, director of the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies, and Epstein. The article is reprised by The First Perspective.
Epstein also appeared on various radio and television programs yesterday to discuss the 1,400 pieces of Nazi-looted art that were found in a Munich apartment. Among the appearances include Radio-Canada’s Pas de midi sans info (beings at 14 minutes), CBC Radio's World at Six (no link available), France Culture and Radio-Shalom CJRS 1650 AM (no link available), The Wall Street Journal, CBC’s The Current with Anna Maria, CBC News Montreal, BBC World Service’s Newshour (begins at 8 minutes and 30 seconds) and Global National News (begins at 11 minutes 34 seconds)
