Researchers in the news

The scholarly work of Concordia faculty and researchers informs and improves society on many issues that affect our daily lives. Visit the Research section to read news stories involving research at Concordia, or read the most recent items here:

  • Education Week features research conducted by James Gavin, professor in the Department of Applied Human Sciences. Gavin studied adolescent perceptions of physical activity and found that teens are just as aware of the mental benefits of exercise as they are of physical benefits. His research is also featured on MediLexicon, Medical News Today and Top News.

  • The research of Virginia Penhune, professor in the Department of Psychology and a CRDH researcher, in collaboration with Robert Zatorre, a cognitive neuroscientist at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital is featured in Futura-Sciences. Their study suggests that musical training before age seven has a significant effect on the development of the brain, an effect substantial enough to be seen on a brain scan. Penhune and Zatorre are part of the Centre for Research on Brain, Language and Music.

  • Futura-Sciences publishes an article on research conducted by Damon Matthews, professor in the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment, which finds that climate change is irreversible, but not inevitable.

  • Erica Lehrer, professor in the Department of History, presented her research at the Disturbing Pasts: Memories, Controversies and Creativity conference. Lehrer discussed the relevance of tourism and "memory work" to the post-Holocaust Jewish experience, focusing on Poland: Material World Blog. A video of her discussion is available at Open Art Archive.
