Expert commentators

Concordia faculty and researchers are regularly asked to offer expert, informed opinions on many of today's most pressing problems. Read some of the latest news items about Concordians:

  • An article in the Toronto Star discusses the Urban Heat Island effect, which is the effect that makes a city hotter than its rural surroundings despite receiving the same amount of solar radiation. Hashem Akbari, professor in the Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering, explains that reducing the heat in cities like Toronto is a social justice issue because people often need air conditioning but many cannot afford it. The article is reprised by Metro Toronto and London: The News.

  • The Montreal Gazette features a piece about the redevelopment of the former Hippodrôme de Montréal site. The article quotes Pierre Gauthier, professor in the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment, who expresses his skepticism about the project. Last year, as an assignment in his third-year urban planning course, Gauthier asked his students to produce master plans for the site. The Montreal Gazette highlights certain aspects of the student proposals.

  • Adel Hanna, professor in the Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering, is interviewed by CBC News Montreal (appearance begins at 1 minute and 25 seconds) about a potential sink hole site at the corner of St. Denis and Roy.

  • Henri Habib, distinguished professor emeritus in the Department of Political Science, is quoted in La Presse in an article about the crisis in Egypt.
