Identity of Iroquois nation

Posted on July 12, 2011

Gavin Taylor, a professor in the Department of History and an expert in native Canadians, is quoted by the National Post and the Indian Country Today Media Network about news of a Mohawk woman claiming Ottawa is trying to strip the Iroquois nation of its identity after border officials confiscated her Iroquois passport. “Perhaps the Iroquois passport has less legitimacy than passports from other countries — they don’t have a seat at the United Nations, and in the eyes of a lot Canadians their claim to nationality is a little dubious,” he says.
