Congratulations to the John Molson School of Business (JMSB) team that reached the finals at the 2012 Collegiate Ethics Case Competition at the Eller College of Management in Tucson, Arizona. Kristina McCaughey and Danny Shakibaian represented JMSB at the annual event, which had 28 teams (divided into four divisions) competing.

Comprehensive research and an impressive presentation of their recommendations allowed the JMSB team to finish at the top of a talented division to advance to the finals.

The competition had three rounds. In the first round, teams were asked to prepare a 20-minute presentation and handle questions during a 5-minute question-and-answer period. In the second round, judges asked the teams six pre-determined questions. Point totals for the first two rounds were added together to determine the winners of the four divisions, who then moved on to a final round.

In the finals, teams had only 10 minutes to present their recommendations and were asked one standard question by the judges.

This year's case was about hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” as a method of extracting natural gas. Proponents of the method argue that it has the potential to be a powerful economic engine, while its detractors claim that the process comes at a great cost and that its benefits are frequently overstated by its advocates.

The final results of the competition were:

  1. Carroll School of Management, Boston College
  2. Warrington College of Business Administration, University of Florida
  3. College of Business and Economics, University of Idaho
  4. John Molson School of Business, Concordia University

The John Molson Case Competition Committee would like to thank Coach, Tim Field for guiding the team to an inspired performance of which all members of the JMSB family can be proud. Thanks also to Amr Ezzat providing the team with valuable insight into the energy industry.

Thanks also to Mark Haber, head coach and advisor to the Competition Program, for his boundless commitment to the program.
The Committee thanks sponsors Pfizer, Power Corporation of Canada, National Bank and Rio Tinto for their contributions to the competition program.
