Concordia University is participating in iGEM 2013: the International Genetically Engineered Machine competition.

This is the premier undergraduate Synthetic Biology competition in the world. Within the context of iGEM, Synthetic Biology is the modification of living organisms, such as bacteria and yeast, using genetic networks, which are often designed and simulated by engineers. Projects previously carried out by iGEM teams include heavy-metal biosensors and laser-guided bacteria! Teams passing their respective regional competitions in October proceed to the final competition at MIT (Boston) in November, 2013.

This is a unique opportunity for aspiring scientists and engineers to take a peek at the leading edge of Bioengineering research, and contribute to the success of Concordia’s team. We (Biology and Engineering) are currently recruiting 6-8 prospective undergraduate students to join an existing team of scholars, and participate (if selected) in the formulation of an iGEM project.

An information session and interviews will be announced soon, and the lab/computer work will start upon the conclusion of the winter term. Exceptional students will be encouraged to apply to NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards, with the help of a qualified faculty member (deadline: Feb. 28th, 2013).

Interested students (especially from Molecular Biology & Computer Engineering/Science) are encouraged to provide: (a) a 1-2 page Personal Statement, justifying their interest in iGEM and (b) a 1-2 page resume highlighting any knowledge, skills and aptitudes relevant to the success of the team effort. Please e-mail the two documents to the iGEM-Concordia team leaders: N. Kharma or Luc Varin.
