Publications

Leander Schneider’s book Government of Development: Peasants and Politicians in Postcolonial Tanzania has been published by Indiana University Press in September 2014. James C. Scott (Yale University) writes:

"All students of Africa and of development should read Leander Schneider’s superb analysis of Tanzanian rural policy under Nyerere. First, it sits absolutely atop the mountain of other studies of villagisation by virtue of its empirical mastery and analytical subtlety. Second, it represents a devastating critique of the fatal methodological simplifications that plague much of contemporary social science."

The chapters speak to one another beautifully, and the text holds together with grace and depth. It represents excellent scholarship and will be of interest to academics and students in a range of disciplines - sociology, women’s studies, political science, philosophy, and the applied health sciences.”
