Raoul Wallenberg Project

MIGS has now launched The Raoul Wallenberg Legacy of Leadership Project website. Funded by The Swedish Institute, the MIGS’s project aims at increasing awareness of Raoul Wallenberg, his legacy and its importance for contemporary mass atrocity prevention among the younger generation and the general public in selected cities of North America and internationally in the fall 2014.

The events will take place in New York City at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University (18 September), Ottawa at the Centre for International Policy Studies at Ottawa University (30 September), Toronto at the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto (14 October) and Montreal at Concordia University (29 October). Confirmed speakers include:

  • Mike Abramowitz, Director, National Institute for Holocaust Education, US Holocaust Memorial Museum.
  • Irwin Cotler, Canadian Member of Parliament for Mount Royal.
  • Paul Dewar, Member of Parliament for Ottawa Centre and current chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Prevention of Genocide and other Crimes against Humanity. 
  • Adama Dieng, UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide.
  • Jonathan Kay, Comment Pages Editor of The National Post. 
  • Errol MendesLawyer and Author, Professor of Law.
  • Luis Moreno Ocampo, Founding Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.
  • Irvin Studin, Founder of Global Brief Magazine

Our partners include the Montréal Holocaust Memorial Centre, the Consulate General of Sweden in New York, the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University, the Center for International Cooperation at New York University, the Centre for International Policy Studies at Ottawa University, Global Shapers Ottawa Hub, the Swedish Embassy in Canada, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Prevention of Genocide and Other Crimes Against Humanity, the Bill Graham Centre for Contemporary International History, and the Canadian International Council’s Toronto and Montreal Branches.

  • On 12 August, Kyle Matthews sat down with Global TV Montréal to discuss the threat posed by the Islamic State and the atrocities committed against minorities in Iraq. Watch Kyle’s interview with Camille Ross.
  • On 21 August Kyle Matthews sat down with Mutsumi Takahashi at CTV Montreal to discuss the rise of the Islamic State and what can be done to protect civilians.
  • On 22 August, Kyle Matthews appeared on CTV National News to discuss the Islamic State and the human rights crisis in Syria and Iraq. Watch “Carving out a Caliphate”.
  • On 22 August the Canadian International Council published a blog by Kyle Matthews titled “Digging for Truth in Guatemala” which featured photos from a recent trip to the country.


Media

  • In mid-June, MIGS held its Professional Training Program on the Prevention of Mass Atrocities. We have produced a short video featuring some of the highlights of the training program, which you can watch on the institute’s Youtube Channel.
