New Freire conversation series launches in October

Submitted by Vitor Yano

Following last year’s conversation series Beyond Pedagogy of the Oppressed: The Evolution of Freire’s Thinking, the CSLP is now hosting In Dialogue with Paulo Freire: A Conversation Series on the Talking Books. The new series is also organized by student affiliate Vitor Yano and will continue the objective of building and maintaining a community of scholars, students, practitioners, and others interested in Freire’s work, critical pedagogy, popular education, and education more broadly.

Last year’s series explored the evolution of Freire’s thinking

Each of the monthly sessions that took place from September 2025 to May 2026 was centered on a particular book, exploring the changes in Freire’s thought throughout his life, while also considering the historical and political contexts in which he lived, as well as his influences and legacy. The following works were selected for the last year’s series:

  • The Importance of the Act of Reading (FR: Le monde et le mot)
  • Education for Critical Consciousness (FR: L’Éducation : pratique de la liberté)
  • Extension or Communication (FR: Extension ou communication)
  • Pedagogy in Process: The Letters to Guinea-Bissau (FR: Lettres à la Guinée-Bissau sur l'alphabétisation)
  • Pedagogy of the city (FR: L'Éducation dans la ville)
  • Pedagogy of Hope: Reliving the Pedagogy of the Oppressed (FR: Pédagogie de l’espoir)
  • Pedagogy of Freedom: Ethics, Democracy, and Civic Courage (FR: Pédagogie de l’autonomie)
  • Pedagogy of Indignation (FR: Pédagogie de l'indignation)

New series will focus on dialogical works

Following the same format, this year’s sessions will also take place monthly. This time, however, the focus will be on the works belonging to what is considered the second phase of Freire’s bibliography: the “talking books”, which were written collaboratively and in a dialogical format with other authors. The following works will be discussed:

  • Dialogue / Pilgrims of the obvious: or the not-so-obvious? (with Ivan Illich)
  • A Pedagogy for Liberation: Dialogues on Transforming Education (with Ira Shor)
  • Literacy: Reading the Word and the World (with Donaldo Macedo)
  • Learning to Question: A Pedagogy of Liberation (with Antonio Faundez)
  • We Make the Road by Walking: Conversations on Education and Social Change (with Myles Horton)
  • Paulo Freire on Higher Education (with Miguel Escobar, Alfredo Fernandez, and Gilberto Guevara-Niebla)
  • Pedagogy of Solidarity (with Ana Maria Araujo Freire)

This year, guest participants will also contribute to the discussions by bringing their own perspectives and experiences. The inaugural session will take place on October 29th, 2026, featuring the online participation of Peter Mayo (University of Malta).

Other invited scholars will include Fergal Finnegan (Maynooth University, Ireland), Hanne Svarstad (Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway), Monika Kastner (University of Klagenfurt, Austria), Tom Griffiths (University of Newcastle, Australia / Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway), and Josafá da Cunha (Federal University of Parana, Brazil).

The sessions will take place in the last Wednesday of each month (except December): November 25th, 2026, January 27th, February 24th, March 31st, April 28th, and May 26th, 2027.

If you are interested in participating, please register here.

You do not need to have participated in the previous series to attend this year’s sessions.

  • The Importance of the Act of Reading (Le monde et le mot)
  • Education for Critical Consciousness (L’Éducation : pratique de la liberté)

  • Extension or Communication (Extension ou communication)

  • Pedagogy in Process: The Letters to Guinea-Bissau (Lettres à la Guinée-Bissau sur l’alphabétisation)

  • Pedagogy of the City (L’Éducation dans la ville)

  • Pedagogy of Hope: Reliving the Pedagogy of the Oppressed (Pédagogie de l’espoir)

  • Pedagogy of Freedom: Ethics, Democracy, and Civic Courage (Pédagogie de l’autonomie)

  • Pedagogy of Indignation (Pédagogie de l’indignation)

  • Dialogue / Pilgrims of the Obvious: Or the Not-So-Obvious? (avec Ivan Illich)

  • A Pedagogy for Liberation: Dialogues on Transforming Education (avec Ira Shor)

  • Literacy: Reading the Word and the World (avec Donaldo Macedo)

  • Learning to Question: A Pedagogy of Liberation (avec Antonio Faundez)

  • We Make the Road by Walking: Conversations on Education and Social Change (avec Myles Horton)

  • Paulo Freire on Higher Education (avec Miguel Escobar, Alfredo Fernandez et Gilberto Guevara-Niebla)

  • Pedagogy of Solidarity (avec Ana Maria Araujo Freire)
