A new podcast episode from the Canadian Practitioners’ Network for the Prevention of Extremist Violence (CPN-PREV) features CSLP Research Coordinator Zeina Ismail-Allouche in conversation with Melanie Bania, Executive Director of the Canadian Centre for Safer Communities.
In this episode, Ismail-Allouche and Bania explore what it means to build safer communities beyond enforcement-based approaches, emphasizing prevention, equity, and authentic human connection. Central to the discussion is the Centre’s PEER approach—Prevention, Equity, Engagement, and Relationship—which guides its work supporting community safety and well-being initiatives across Canada.
Bania brings a rich and multifaceted background to the conversation. She joined the CCFSC in 2023 and supports the development, monitoring, and evaluation of Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB) plans nationwide. Earlier in her career, she contributed to the launch of the Canadian Municipal Network on Crime Prevention in 2006 and has since built extensive expertise in collaborative governance, community-based crime prevention, youth justice, and program evaluation.
Her professional path spans frontline work with substance use and justice-involved populations, senior leadership roles, and academic research, giving her a uniquely holistic perspective on prevention. In the episode, she reflects on how her personal experiences—including her upbringing in a Polish immigrant family in Northern Ontario—have shaped her commitment to community-centered and anti-oppressive approaches. She also highlights the importance of bringing one’s full self into prevention work and draws inspiration from Indigenous perspectives, including seven-generation thinking, in envisioning long-term, sustainable change.
The conversation offers a thoughtful and hopeful reflection on the challenges and possibilities of prevention work today, underscoring the value of relationship-building, local engagement, and shared human values in fostering safer communities.
