The Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance (CSLP) is pleased to sponsor an upcoming session of the Exploring World Languages and Cultures Series that invites participants to take a deeper look at matcha as a cultural practice shaped by history, globalization, and contemporary debate. The series is presented as part of the CSLP’s EmpowerGrad workshops by our Student Affiliates, and is organized by the Concordia Japanese Language and Culture Community
Matcha as a Global Cultural Practice will explore how matcha—often perceived today as a trendy, everyday beverage—emerged from specific cultural, historical, and ritual traditions in Japan, and how its meanings have shifted as it has traveled globally. Participants will be invited to consider questions of authenticity, sustainability, and commercialization, while reflecting on how cultural practices are transformed as they circulate across borders.
The session will feature guest speaker Reina Sakao (website), also known as Madame Matcha, a fourth-generation tea practitioner whose family has been dedicated to Japanese green tea production since the Meiji era. Drawing on her personal and professional experience, Sakao will share insights into the past, present, and future of matcha and Japanese tea culture. The event will also include a brief demonstration, offering participants a grounded, experiential entry point into cha-no-yu (the Japanese tea ceremony).
Guided by a professional practitioner, attendees will engage in discussion and reflection on how matcha is practiced, understood, and valued in Japan and abroad—examining a familiar ritual through traditional, critical, and global lenses.
