The CSLP is pleased to highlight a new book by CSLP member Ilya Zrudlo, Navigating the Moral Landscape of Youth Development and Community Education, just published by Bloomsbury.
Based on a study of 12 community education organizations in North America, the book examines how values are conveyed—often implicitly—within nonformal youth education settings. It identifies four recurring “ethical frames” that shape practice: the entrepreneur, the activist, the artist, and the naturalist. While each frame offers meaningful contributions, Zrudlo argues that each also carries ethical and educational ambiguities that limit its adequacy when used alone or uncritically combined.
Drawing on the work of philosophers including Hannah Arendt, Simone Weil, Iris Murdoch, Mary Midgley, and Charles Taylor, the book provides a reflective framework for educators, community organizations, policymakers, and researchers seeking to navigate the moral dimensions of youth development with greater care and clarity.
