The CSLP is proud to share that doctoral student Liam McMahon has been awarded a $5,000 prize from the School of Health at Concordia University to support his innovative research on school food systems. As part of this award, Liam will present a poster at the 2025 School of Health Annual Research Conference, taking place on May 22.
Liam’s research investigates the role of school food systems in promoting economic and social development. He aims to advance pedagogical and policy frameworks for education-integrated models of consumption and curriculum to support food literacy, public health, and sustainable agriculture. Drawing on his experience as a food security program manager in Montreal, Liam brings both practical and academic insight to the project. He is particularly interested in exploring farm-to-school programs as pedagogically rich and environmentally sustainable sites of education and community building.
Liam is working under the supervision of Dr. David Waddington—his PhD supervisor, co-Director of the CSLP, and expert in progressive education and technology—and Dr. Mitch McLarnon, Assistant Professor in Concordia’s Department of Education and CSLP member, whose ethnographic research intersects with health and community gardening. Liam is currently developing an integrative review of key literature in the field—a foundation for future fieldwork and the basis for his upcoming poster presentation.
