The Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance (CSLP) is pleased to welcome Dr. Hicham Tiflati as its newest member. Dr. Tiflati will serve as the CEGEP representative on the CSLP’s Executive Committee, bringing his expertise in humanities, religion, and civic literacy to the team.
A professor in the Department of Humanities, Philosophy, and Religion at John Abbott College, Dr. Tiflati is also a chargé de cours at Bishop’s University and the Islam expert at the Center for Civic Religious Literacy. His research focuses on religion, politics, and secularism, with a particular emphasis on radicalization, disengagement from violent extremism, Muslim identity construction, and Islamic schooling.
Beyond academia, Dr. Tiflati is an active researcher and practitioner, having worked with Muslim communities for over a decade. His work includes direct engagement with families of Canadians affected by radicalization, as well as the development of community-based prevention programs for parents and youth in Montreal-area Islamic centers. He has also pioneered interreligious dialogue initiatives, co-founding Dialogue Islamo-Chrétien and coordinating an Islamic-Jewish dialogue between École Le Savoir and Bialik High School.
Dr. Tiflati’s recent publications reflect his commitment to exploring contemporary issues facing religious communities in North America. They include "Muslim Youth Issues in North America: The Canadian Context" (Oxford Research Encyclopedia), which examines the evolving identities of Muslim youth in the West and the challenges of cultural globalization, and “Going Beyond Campus to Strengthen the Campus: Confronting Hate, Extremism, and Antisemitism through Restorative Justice and Peacebuilding Education", a chapter in Confronting Antisemitism on Campus (Peter Lang), which addresses strategies for countering hate and extremism through education.
We are excited to have Dr. Tiflati as part of the CSLP and look forward to his contributions to our research and community engagement efforts.
