Marie-Ève Carignan, CSLP member and head of the UNESCO-PREV chair’s media division, has been appointed to a new Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) Expert Panel on the socio-economic impact of misinformation in science and health.

Composed of a multidisciplinary group of researchers and experts, the panel aims to answer the following: “What are the socio-economic impacts of science and health misinformation and disinformation on the public and public policy in Canada?”

Alex Himelfarb, the panel chair, has emphasized the significance of this topic in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. “In the past year and a half, we’ve witnessed just how quickly false and misleading information can spread and how dangerous that can be,” he said.

Carignan, who is also an associate professor at University of Sherbrooke’s Department of Communications, will be contributing her media expertise and extensive knowledge of crisis communication (among other topics) to the panel's research agenda.
