State initiated settlement projects in disputed/occupied regions play a crucial role in determining both the contours of territorial conflicts and its outcomes. Israel's settlement project in the West Bank and Morocco's project in Western Sahara are considered by many scholars and practitioners as a major barrier to conflict resolution in both regions. The talk investigates these settlement projects and in particular explores why and under what conditions a small number of states initiated them in the post-colonial era.
