Faculty of Arts and Science welcomes new faculty members for 2026-2027

The Faculty of Arts and Science is pleased to welcome a new group of faculty members whose expertise spans the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and professional programs.

“We are delighted to welcome these exceptional scholars and educators to the Faculty of Arts and Science,” says Dean Pascale Sicotte. “Their research, teaching and community engagement reflect the breadth of talent and creativity that define our faculty. From advancing health and sustainability to exploring new technologies, languages and social challenges, they will enrich our classrooms, strengthen our research community and inspire our students.”

Émile Baril
Department of Geography, Planning and Environment

Émile Baril's research examines the intersections of migration, urban labour and the platform economy. Drawing on expertise in human geography and digital humanities, he studies the experiences of migrant workers in sectors such as food delivery and transportation, and the impacts of emerging digital technologies on work and citizenship. He is also affiliated to the Institute for Research on Migration and Society (IRMS) and Bridging Divides.

Hugo Cordeau
Department of Economics

Specializing in environmental and urban economics, Hugo Cordeau investigates climate policy and transportation decarbonization. His research examines how consumers adopt electric vehicles and respond to charging infrastructure, combining economic analysis with large-scale data and machine learning methods. Hugo is joining the Department of Economics in the context of a collaboration with Volt-Age, which allows him to advance his research on the energy transition through Volt-Age funding and network of stakeholders across Canada’s energy sector.

Salini Karuvade
Department of Physics

A theoretical physicist specializing in quantum information theory and quantum computation, Salini Karuvade studies how quantum systems behave in realistic, noisy environments. Her research focuses on improving the reliability of quantum computers while exploring related questions in quantum algorithms, machine learning and non-Hermitian physics.

Jessica Garzke
Department of Biology

Joining the Faculty in May 2027, Jessica Garzke studies how climate change alters aquatic food webs and the nutritional foundations that support them. Integrating field research, experimental ecology and omics approaches, she examines how environmental change affects zooplankton, ecosystem resilience and the transfer of essential nutrients through marine and freshwater ecosystems.

Laura Godfrey
Department of Biology

Also joining the Faculty in May 2027 Laura Godfrey is a molecular biologist whose research focuses on cancer epigenetics, gene regulation and chromatin biology. Her work seeks to uncover the epigenetic mechanisms that drive enhancer function and gene regulation in cancer, which could contribute to future therapeutic strategies.

Lars Kruse
Department of Biology

Canada Research Chair nominee Lars Kruse studies the remarkable chemical diversity of plants. His research combines synthetic biology, enzyme discovery and metabolic engineering to better understand plant specialized metabolic pathways and develop new approaches for producing compounds with pharmaceutical and biotechnology applications.

Enrico Quilico
Department of Applied Human Sciences

A Canada Research Chair nominee in Patient-oriented Community Reintegration Research in Traumatic Brain Injury, Enrico Quilico focuses on improving health and quality of life after brain injury. His work examines peer-led leisure-time physical activity programs and community-based approaches that support long-term recovery and social participation.

Geneviève Bibeau
Département d'études françaises

Geneviève Bibeau specializes in the development of oral communication skills in French. With a background in linguistics, applied linguistics, francization and second-language instruction, she is committed to creating supportive learning environments that help students gain confidence communicating in French.

Christopher Gutierrez
Department of Communication Studies

Christopher Gutierrez's research explores the intersections of affect theory, media studies, architecture and art history. His work examines how cultural and spatial environments shape experience, perception and meaning across different media and artistic forms.

Nadia Lafrenière
Department of Mathematics and Statistics

An expert in algebraic combinatorics, Nadia Lafrenière studies combinatorial structures, permutations and mathematical dynamics. Her research explores topics ranging from random processes and card shuffling to the emerging field of dynamical algebraic combinatorics.

Elliott Morrice
Department of Psychology

Elliott Morrice is a clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of personality disorders and transdiagnostic, evidence-based approaches to therapy. His research explores the impact of visual impairments on reading and cognitive assessments, as well as the use of assistive technologies in low-vision rehabilitation. Alongside his research and teaching in psychology, he maintains a clinical practice in Montreal adopting integrative approaches to therapy drawing on cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, and acceptance and commitment therapies.
