Graduate studies involve more than academic ability and hard work. As you move into increasingly independent research, you may face competing expectations, greater autonomy, uncertainty, and decisions about your academic and professional direction.  Developing the right mindset, and support systems can help you navigate these challenges, make the most of your graduate experience, and prepare for what comes next.

Designed for thesis-based masters and doctoral students, this interactive workshop invites you to reflect on how you approach your graduate studies and consider the mindset shifts and behaviours that can support your academic, personal and professional growth. Through reflection, discussion and practical activities, you will explore how to balance independence with seeking support, respond constrictively to feedback, build meaningful relationships, and make intentional choices about your development. You will also identify practical steps you can take to strengthen your approach and prepare for the next stage of your journey.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  1. Identify key mindset shifts that support independent research, personal and professional growth in your program
  2. Distinguish between productive independence and isolation, and recognize when to seek guidance and support
  3. Apply practical strategies for seeking, interpreting, evaluating, and responding constructively to feedback
  4. Assess your academic, peer, and professional support network and identify opportunities to strengthen them
