Please join us for a symposium created by members of Art School Takeout, students in the Department of Studio Arts at Concordia University. The members of Art School Takeout share an interest in the role of the artist and cultural worker in 2023, offering a collective exhibition of works relating to their respective identities as creators. The artist as involved in their time: relationships and identities showcases processes of making across visual arts, language, and performance, as well as relationships to communities. 

All aspects of the symposium are the outcome of several months of collective conversations, reading, writing, group-planning to support the relationships and identities represented in the symposium. As the curatorial statement for the exhibition (below) suggests, this process “reveal[s] that the role of an artist continues to be more than that of creator”.

This work grew from an experimental professional development course, wherein students practice the management and administrative labour tasks behind the production of cultural work.  

The artist as involved in their time: relationships and identities departs from Dionne Brand’s claim, “all artists are involved in their time,” used to describe the many roles assumed by 16th century German artist, Albrecht Durer. Set in the present, the artists of Art School Takeout reflect on the timeless statement through the lens of 2023 contemporary practitioners, revealing that the role of an artist continues to be more than that of creator. 

This is is a multi-disciplinary exhibition capturing the diverse experiences of emerging artists within the Art World. With projects ranging from 2D media like painting and drawing, photography and video, 3D sculpture, installation, and performance, the exhibition embodies the adaptiveness and ingenuity required of contemporary artists navigating a saturated and rapidly expanding world of cultural production. The works are connected by the contributors’ senses of identities, reflections on practice, sociopolitical perspectives, and creative processes.
