Vernissage of FOFA's Spring Exhibitions

Join us to celebrate the opening of FOFA’s Spring Shows on March 12th, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Between March 9 – May 22, the FOFA Gallery will present works by Po B. K. Lomami, Abi Hodson, and Tina Lam that explore the spectral presence of otherworldly forces at the threshold of material and immaterial experience, from subatomic particles to the transforming body of the city. Engaged tensions between visibility and opacity, proximity and distance, and the haptic desire to see and touch, these emerging artists attend to forms of presence that linger, pass through, or resist capture—whether in data, architecture, or the cosmos.

On view in the Main Space: Tina Lam’s ...and the Cosmos returns to claim its place

A site-specific installation for the FOFA Gallery, Lam suspends hand-molded paper and foil elements from the ceiling, evoking the passage of neutrinos—subatomic “ghost particles” that move imperceptibly through all matter. Staging a dialogue between permanence and ephemerality, scientific knowledge and speculative poetics, her work renders the invisible sensorially present. In doing so, Lam invites viewers into a cosmological threshold where matter appears both grounded and ghostly, held in a state of quiet suspension.

On view in the Black Box and St-Catherine Vitrine: Abi Hodson’s Peep Show: Parallel loops, Porous lines

For FOFA’s Sainte-Catherine windows, Hodson veils the glass with opaque emulsion punctured by cut-out portals, offering partial glimpses of sculptural forms layered with latex and green screen knit. Referencing Montréal’s construction sites, the installation adopts the visual logic of a peep show, recasting urban “newness” as something desirous and unfinished. In the Black Box, motion-responsive video bodies merge and unfurl across surfaces, inviting viewers into a porous encounter where architecture and flesh blur, and touch lingers between exposure and display.

In their multimedia installation for FOFA’s York Vitrines, real-time meteorological data from the Democratic Republic of Congo is translated into an amorphous audiovisual composition as a woman enumerates missing records of lives lost in the genocide. At this unstable threshold between data and death, opacity and visibility, Lomami invites passing viewers into an encounter shaped by complicity and the difficulty of witnessing what has been rendered invisible.

Du 9 mars au 22 mai, la Galerie FOFA présentera des œuvres de Po B. K. Lomami, Abi Hodson et Tina Lam qui explorent la présence spectrale de forces d’autres mondes à la frontière entre l'expérience matérielle et immatérielle, des particules subatomiques au corps en transformation de la ville. Engagés dans des tensions entre visibilité et opacité, proximité et distance, et le désir tactile de voir et de toucher, ces artistes émergent·e·s s'intéressent aux formes d'existence qui persistent, traversent ou résistent à la saisie, que ce soit dans les données, l'architecture ou le cosmos.

Dans une installation spécifiquement conçue pour la galerie FOFA, Lam suspend au plafond des éléments en papier et en aluminium moulés à la main, évoquant le passage des neutrinos, ces « particules fantômes » subatomiques qui traversent imperceptiblement toute matière. Son œuvre met en scène un dialogue entre permanence et éphémère, connaissances scientifiques et poétique spéculative, rendant l'invisible sensoriellement présent. Ainsi, Lam invite les spectateur·trice·s à franchir un seuil cosmologique où la matière apparaît à la fois ancrée et insaisissable, maintenue dans un état de suspension silencieuse.

Pour les vitrines FOFA de Sainte-Catherine, Hodson recouvre les vitres d'une émulsion opaque percée de portails découpés, offrant des aperçus partiels de formes sculpturales recouvertes de latex et de tricot vert. Faisant référence aux chantiers de construction de Montréal, l'installation adopte la logique visuelle d'un peep-show, transformant la « nouveauté » urbaine en quelque chose de désirable et d'inachevé. Dans la Boîte noire, des corps vidéo réagissant au mouvement se fondent et se déploient sur les surfaces, invitant les spectateur·trice·s à une rencontre poreuse où l'architecture et la chair s'estompent, et où le toucher oscille entre exposition et mise en scène.

Dans leur installation multimédia pour les Vitrines York de la FOFA, les données météorologiques en temps réel provenant de la République démocratique du Congo sont traduites en une composition audiovisuelle amorphe, tandis qu'une femme énumère les registres manquants des vies perdues dans le génocide. À ce seuil instable entre données et mort, opacité et visibilité, Lomami invite les spectateur·trice·s qui passent à une rencontre marquée par la complicité et la difficulté d'être témoin de ce qui a été rendu invisible.
