First in the Family: The hidden curriculum of graduate studies

Graduate school comes with more than coursework, research, and academic milestones. It also involves a hidden curriculum: the unwritten rules, expectations, and norms that shape how students navigate academic life but are rarely explicitly taught.

This supportive group is designed to make those expectations visible, particularly for first-generation graduate students who may not have inherited access to academic knowledge or professional networks.

Participants will have the opportunities to share their experiences, as well as explore topics such as communicating with faculty and their supervisor, building relationships with mentors, seeking funding and opportunities, participating in academic spaces, and understanding professional expectations.

Objectives

1. To build confidence and find a sense of community with people who have similar struggles as you. 
2. To develop practical strategies for academic and professional situations while navigating graduate school. 
3. To identify and understand the hidden expectations and norms in graduate school.
